Cybersecurity in Central Asia: Real Issues, False Excuse?

Kazakhstan is increasingly subjected to everyday cyber-insecurity.

The main issue of cybersecurity in Central Asia is related to energy infrastructure and major industrial extraction sites.

Local law enforcement agencies see in cybersecurity one of the main drivers for managing potential asymmetric conflicts in case of popular uprisings or terrorist attacks.

By exploiting a real risk – cyber-criminality – for political purposes – cyber-repression, the Central Asian authorities jeopardize their capacity to react adequately.
