November 17-20, 2015

The Uyghurs are one of the ten most populous stateless people in the world. While theyhave a long history of cultural accomplishments and political influences, they have remained marginal in international scholarship given their ambiguous position both in regional studies and in ‘geopolitics’. Nonetheless, given their contribution to global and regional historical and cultural processes, there has developed a transnational community of scholars whose research is focused on the Uyghur people’s history, culture, and society. This four-day conference is the second attempt to bring together a broad spectrum of the international community of scholars whose research is focused on the Uyghur people’s history, culture, and society. The conference is organized by the Central Asia Program at the George Washington University, in partnership with the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB),CERI-Sciences Po, and INALCO.
