Gilman Scholarship Application Open!

The U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program is pleased to announce that the application is open for Gilman and Gilman-McCain Scholarships. This program enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad, providing them with skills critical to our national security and economic prosperity.
Gilman offers scholarships of up to $5,000 to U.S. undergraduate students of high financial need participating in credit-bearing programs abroad or virtual international programs that have a start date from May 1, 2021, to April 30, 2022. Students studying critical need languages may be eligible to receive an additional award of up to $3,000.
The application deadline is Tuesday, March 2, 2021, by 11:59pm Pacific Time.
- Advisors must certify applications by Tuesday, March 9, 2021.
- Students and Advisors will be notified of award status at the end of April 2021.
As part of the Gilman Program, the following scholarships are also available:
Gilman-McCain Scholarship
The Gilman-McCain Scholarship provides awards of $5,000 for child dependents of active duty service members who receive any type of Title IV federal financial aid to study or intern abroad on credit-bearing programs.
Gilman-Israel Scholarship
The Embassy of Israel to the United States has generously provided funding to support at least 5 U.S. students to study in Israel through the Gilman Program. The Embassy of Israel to the United States is also providing funding for Gilman Scholars to study Hebrew under the Critical Need Language Award (CNLA), which is part of the Gilman application. The Gilman Program will also continue to support the study of Arabic through the CNLA in Israel. This additional funding supports a wider effort between the United States and Israel to increase and diversify international student mobility among Israeli and American higher education institutions.
Gilman-FLAD Portugal Scholarship
The Gilman Scholarship Program is proud to partner with the Luso-American Development Foundation (FLAD) in establishing the Gilman-FLAD Portugal Scholarship, a highly selective award for underrepresented U.S. students to study in Portugal. Students also have the opportunity to study Portuguese, a critical need language. This partnership builds cooperation between Portugal and the United States and promotes Portugal as a destination for learning.
Gilman-France Scholarship
The French Embassy in the United States and Gilman Scholarship Program partnership offers a highly selective award for those studying or interning abroad in France. This scholarship supports the overall effort between the United States and France to increase and diversify international student mobility among French and American higher education institutions.
Gilman-Education New Zealand Scholarship
Education New Zealand (ENZ) is New Zealand’s government agency for building international education and promoting New Zealand as a study destination. This partnership sustains a wider effort to support students who have traditionally been underrepresented in study abroad, including those of Native American heritage, and will commit $250,000 over the next five years to support Gilman Scholars who study or intern abroad in New Zealand. Funding is matched by the U.S. Department of State.
Gilman-Global Wales Scholarship
The Global Wales program is a partnership consisting of Universities Wales, the Welsh Government, the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales, and the British Council. This scholarship is committing $25,000 over the next two years to support Gilman Scholars to study at Welsh universities. Funding is matched by the U.S. Department of State.
