Since 2008, CESS has held a number of Regional Conferences in the Central Eurasian region. The 2017 Regional Conference, held jointly with the European Society for Central Asian Studies, at the American University of Central Asia (Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan), was our largest yet.

In 2020, the 7th CESS Regional Conference will be held at the University of World Economy and Diplomacy, Tashkent, Uzbekistan from June 25-28, 2020.

For the CESS 2020 Regional Conference, we invite submissions relating to all aspects of humanities and social science scholarship. The geographic domain of Central Eurasia encompasses Central Asia, the Caucasus, Iran, Afghanistan, Tibet, Mongolia, Siberia, Inner Asia, the Black Sea region, the Volga region, and East and Central Europe. Practitioners and scholars in all fields with an interest in this region are encouraged to participate.

CESS 2020 will be hosted by The University of World Economy and Diplomacy in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

How to Submit a Proposal

We invite the following types of proposals for the Regional Conference: individual paper, pre-organized panel, author-critic forum, book-in-progress panel, roundtable and workshop. Our website provides more information about the requirements of each proposal type.

Please read the conference rules and language policy before submitting a proposal. The primary language of the conference is English. Individual paper proposals are accepted only in English. Panel proposals that involve other languages may be accepted, if well-justified.

Submissions to the Regional Conference are made online at https://www.centraleurasia.org/conferences/regional/#submit. The submission system will open shortly. The deadline for proposal submissions is February 29, 2020 (11.59pm Eastern Standard Time).

We expect to notify applicants of the outcomes of their submission in late March 2020.

Central Eurasian Studies Society (CESS)

CESS was founded in 1999 and incorporated as a non-profit corporation in 2001 and is the first North American-based scholarly society dedicated to the study of Central Eurasia. Since its establishment, the Society has held 20 Annual Conferences and 6 Regional Conferences.

The mission of CESS is to facilitate communication and interaction among scholars of the Central Eurasia region, to promote high standards of scholarship about the Central Eurasia region, to promote cooperation among those concerned with the scholarly study of Central Eurasia, and to promote general knowledge of and public interest in Central Eurasia.

This year’s conference will be hosted by the University of World Economy and Diplomacy (UWED), located in the heart of Tashkent. The University was established in September 1992 and functions under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan. UWED has around 1300 students, including undergraduate and graduate students. In addition to serving students from Uzbekistan, it also hosts foreign students from around the world.

UWED is a higher educational institution that provides training, retraining and advanced training for specialists and academic staff as well as conducts high-level fundamental and applied research in the following areas: International Economics and Management, International Relations and Political Science, International Public and Private Law, and Guiding and Interpreting. There are presently three academic departments at UWED: international Relations, international Economics and management, and International Law.
