Development and Social Change: Contemporary Issues in Central Asia

This four-week summer practicum program in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, offers intellectually adventurous students the opportunity to explore a fascinating country at the crossroads of powerful historical, political, economic, and cultural forces. The program combines unique exposure to and interactions with key Government, Civil Society and International Development Partners in Kyrgyzstan with an overarching seminar-style course and cultural excursions.

This practicum is a great way for students of all majors to learn about an under explored area of the world. Local faculty instruct students on challenges and opportunities facing Kyrgyzstan and Central Asia as a whole, exploring the political, social, economic, and environmental factors influencing the region. Our four-week program is both theoretical and practical in nature, with both guest lectures and daily site visits to local NGO’s/institutions working on crucial developmental issues.

Outside of class, students engage in a rich cultural program involving weekly excursions to breathtaking sites like Lake Issyk-Kul and the Ala-Archa mountains.

Our program fee is $4375, which includes round trip airfare from JFK to Bishkek, housing, a rich academic and cultural program, and four transferable Bard academic credits. Financial aid is available to qualified applicants.

Our application deadline is March 1, 2019.
