SUMMARY:Book presentation: "Mystical Forest: Collected Poems and Short Stories of Dungan Ethnographer Ali Dzhon"
DESCRIPTION:Born in Shor-Tyube\, Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic\, USSR\, in 1951\, Dungan ethnographer and creative writer Ali Dzhon is widely regarded as the pre-eminent writer on the material and spiritual culture and history of the Dungan people\, the Sinophone Muslims of Central Asia. Mystical Forest makes available for the first time in English a significant collection of Dzhon’s poems and short stories\, which he penned in Russian over a span of more than half a century\, from 1969 to 2021\, bridging the Soviet and post-Soviet periods. In these rich literary works\, Dzhon expresses his thoughts about the world around him\, ponders the fate of his people and the meaning of life\, and provides finely nuanced descriptions of his feelings about love\, nature\, and those around him. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker: Kenneth J. Yin teaches modern languages\, literatures\, and linguistics at the City University of New York. His scholarly work focuses on the Dungan literature and culture of Central Asia. Another area of interest for him is Siberian Tungus literatures and cultures\, primarily those of the Udege and Nanai peoples. \n\n\n\nDiscussant: Prof. Mark Bender specializes in traditional performance and performance-connected literature of China\, including local Han and ethnic minority cultures. \n\n\n\nModerator: Aitolkyn Kourmanova is a multimedia and creative editor of multilingual platforms. She has produced and directed analytical content on Eurasia and Central Asia in Russian\, English\, and Uzbek languages. She has a solid background in academic publishing\, digital media creation\, cultural and educational exchange programs\, having worked with various international entities and the NGO sector. Her areas of expertise include strategic recommendations for political economy as well as business and country risk assessments on Central Asia.

While they have a long history of cultural accomplishments and political influences\, they have remained marginal in international scholarship given their ambiguous position both in regional studies and in geopolitics. Nonetheless\, given their contribution to global and regional historical and cultural processes\, there has developed a transnational community of scholars whose research is focused on the Uyghur people’s history\, culture\, society. SUMMARY:Uyghur Neighborhoods in Kazakhstan
DESCRIPTION:with Sean Roberts\, Associate Professor and Director\, International Development Studies Program\, GWU \nWith the fall of the Soviet Union\, the Uyghurs of Kazakhstan\, like many others in the former USSR\, began to resurrect and re-invent traditional cultural practices that had been repressed during the Soviet period as either contrary to socialist atheism or as remnants of a “feudal past.” These traditions included daily practices and rituals based in local communities as well as the informal structure of neighborhood governance that regulates such practices. Since the 1990s\, the importance of these neighborhood structures and practices to Uyghur daily life in Kazakhstan have gradually increased\, and most recently the informal structure of neighborhood governance has even been scaled up to create a Republic-wide organization that represents Uyghur interests to the government of Kazakhstan. This lecture will discuss the evolution of local Uyghur neighborhoods in Kazakhstan over the last twenty years\, focusing on these communities’ roles in both cultural resurrection and political mobilization. \nSean R. Roberts\, PhD is a professor at the Elliott school and the Director of the International Development Studies program. He is a cultural anthropologist who has done extensive fieldwork among the Uyghur people of Central Asia and China\, and worked for USAID in Central Asia on democracy programs. In 1996 he produced a documentary film on the Uyghur people titled\, Waiting for Uighurstan.
