Beyond Crimea: Russian Compatriot and Reimperialization Policies in Central Asia

Based on the research of her forthcoming book Beyond Crimea: The New Russian Empire (Yale University Press, February 2015), Dr. Grigas will discuss Moscow’s policies towards the Russian minorities and Russian speakers in the Central Asia and how they relate to Russia’s broader foreign policy aims to regain influence and possibly territories in the five countries of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan.
Agnia Grigas is an energy and political risk expert, specializing in Russia, Eastern Europe and the post-Soviet space. She has written two books: “Beyond Crimea: The New Russian Empire” (Yale University Press, forthcoming 2015) and “The Politics of Energy and Memory between the Baltic States and Russia” (Ashgate, 2013). Currently she is working on her third book: The New Geopolitics of Gas (Harvard University Press, scheduled for 2017). She is a nonresident Senior Fellow at the Atlantic Council and at the McKinnon Center for Global Affairs at Occidental College, and is an official contributor to The Hill and a frequent media contributor (CNN, Forbes, Bloomberg, Reuters).
