Why English: Understanding Central Asian Attitudes and Engagement with the English Language
Department of State Program Officers and Research Analysts seek up to four interns to analyze and collect data on English language use and proficiency in four Central Asian countries. Interns’ work will inform United States Government programming and efforts to support the study of English in the region.
This internship will involve the analysis of survey data and focus group transcripts from four Central Asian countries to inform United States Government programming and efforts to support the study of English in the region. Interns will produce a series of written analytic memos and have the opportunity to present their findings to US diplomats and policymakers involved in designing and implementing English language programming as well as United States public diplomacy efforts more broadly.
Applicants are encouraged to highlight any specific interests, experiences, or expertise related to the region as well as proficiency with statistics software (R, Stata, SPSS). Prior knowledge of the region and/or statistics software are not mandatory, but an interest and willingness to learn will make this internship far more rewarding. Knowledge of regional languages is not mandatory, but interns who have proficiency in regional languages would have the opportunity to analyze focus group transcripts in Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Uzbek, Tajik, and Russian.
